~March 22 update~ In March and April, Liebesfreud's free "Last Fridays" concerts will be held at the First Unitarian Universalist Church 2125 Chestnut Street Philadelphia, PA Join us there on March 26 and April 30! Details on our Calendar page. ################################################## ~ February 1st update ~ The 5th season of our free "Last Fridays" series kicked off with the early op. 18 #1 Beethoven Quartet. Next month features the late, and truly great op. 130. March & April programs are still in the works, but to finish out the spring in May we have the fabulous duo of Dara and Jesus Morales joining us for the gorgeous Brahms Bb major Sextet. Don't miss this one! ################################################## ~ October 13th update ~ This season's "Last Fridays" series begins in October with music by Schubert, Ravel and Dohnanyi. Venue will again be the Art Alliance on Rittenhouse Square. November's program wraps up our Mendelssohn year with two late works: the op. 81 Quartet and the op.87 Quintet. December's program occurs mid-month - our 7th annual Beethoven's Birthday celebration. Details on the Calendar page. ################################################## ~ June 11th update ~ Rehearsals begin for our annual Pajama Concert at the Strings International Music Festival in nearby Bryn Mawr. JUNE 19th. Program in tribute to the genius of Mendelssohn on the 200th anniversary of his birth. Op. 13 Quartet and the famous Octet (op. 20) with young guest artists from the Festival. Don't miss it! ################################################## ~ December 16th update ~ Beethoven's Birthday [BB]. Liebesfreud's Sixth Annual BB concert netted about $2000 for Trinity Center's Community Outreach Partnership (CORP) which provides food and shelter for (otherwise) homeless men. ################################################## ~ November 28th update ~ Annual Beethoven's Birthday [BB] concert (and silent auction) on December 14th @ 5pm. "Last Fridays" series resumes at Art Alliance (free concerts, February-May) on February 27th. Details on 'Calendar' page. ################################################## ~ September 1st update ~ Art Alliance hosts Autumn's three free "Last Fridays" concerts. Please see 'Calendar' page for program details. ################################################## ~ June 13th update ~ Liebesfreud opens summer activities with Master Class and Annual "Pajama" Concert at Bryn Mawr College on Sunday. Also, Phil is back from the Orchestra tour to China. (Reminder: monthly quiz to appear in a few days...) ################################################## ~October 18th update~ This month enjoy a preview of our "Last Fridays" all-Elgar concert. Radio station WRTI (90.1 FM) invites Liebesfreud to return to the air waves. WRTI studio "Live Performance"! Thursday, October 25th just after the 2pm news: Hear the middle movement of Elgar's String Quartet. Then come hear the Violin Sonata and entire Quartet -FREE- at the Art Alliance. Admission: Free ################################################## ~ September 18th update ~ Two Invitations: Liebesfreud has, again, been invited to perform live on radio station 'WRTI'. The occasion is the 100th Anniversary of the birth of Dmitri Shostakovich. If you miss it on the radio on September 25th... you can hear it Friday, the 29th (free) at the Ethical Society (please see 'Calendar' page) or... our second invitation to perform for a Philadelphia Orchestra Postlude event! October 13th, 10:00 pm in Verizon Hall. In honor of the Shostakovich centenary, the same: the iconic master's String Quartet #6 in Gmajor. Free with admission to that evening's Philadelphia Orchestra concert. Program: Shostakovich 1st and 2nd Piano Concertos, with Andre Watts and Tchaikovsky Symphony #6 ("Pathetique"). Christoph Eschenbach conducts. ################################################## ~ July 4th update ~ Come hear Jennifer Montone, the Philadelphia Orchestra's newly appointed Principal Horn, in her first Philadelphia Chamber Music appearance! The first concert in our new season's "Last Fridays" series continues the observance of this 250th Anniversary Mozart year with the Quintet, K. 407, for Horn and Strings and, in celebration of the Shostakovich centenary, that composer's String Quartet #6 in Gmajor. September 29th, 5:30 pm. Philadelphia Ethical Society on Rittenhouse Square. Admission - Free. ################################################## ~ June 22nd update ~ Summer is upon us. Just a reminder of our late night, Late Beethoven concert on June 30th (10p.m.) at Bryn Mawr College. A definite bonus: Bass virtuoso Harold Robinson joins us! Please stay tuned! ################################################## ~ June 1st update ~ Liebesfreud has been invited to participate in the Kimmel Center's day-long Summer Solstice celebration on Saturday, June 24th. Program will include the sunny Italian Serenade of Hugo Wolf. Check 'Calendar' page for exact time and location. (info also at www.kimmelcenter.org) ################################################## ~ May 18th update ~ Once again Liebesfreud is priveleged to share the stage with a principal player from the Philadelphia Orchestra. Harold Robinson joins for Dvorak's Bass Quintet on our June "Last Fridays" program! (please see 'Calendar' page for more info) ################################################## ~ May 1st update ~ Liebesfreud has been invited by Christoph Eschenbach, the Philadelphia Orchestra's Maestro, to perform at a 'Postlude' event in Verizon Hall following the Orchestra's May 17th performance of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony! While the Orchestra concert (at 8:00) is sold out, seating (Free Admission!) is available for our 10:00 pm* performance of Beethoven's F major Quartet, op. 135. * subject to end time of Orchestra concert (Quartet performance approx. 35 minutes). ################################################## ~ April 30th update ~ Beethoven's first published String Quartet, opus 18 #3 in D major, may be the best-known but is one of three masterpieces on Liebesfreud's fifth concert in its "Last Fridays" series on May 26th. The program also includes Rachmaninoff's youthful Romance and Scherzo and a true rarity by Rimsky-Korsakov (both on our CD!) (please see 'Calendar' page) ################################################## ~ April 21st update ~ Beethoven's late masterpiece, the String Quartet, opus 135 in F major, will be the featured work on Liebesfreud's fourth concert in its "Last Fridays" series on April 28th. The program opens with Schubert's powerful "Quartetsatz" (opener, also, on our CD!) and Mendelssohn's radiant op. 81 quartet. "Last Fridays": Same time, same place. Free admission. (please see 'Calendar' page) ################################################## ~ March 24th update ~ Honor to Haydn on the 274th anniversary of his birth! The 3rd in our series of six "Last Fridays" concerts: 5:30 pm March 31st at Chambers-Wylie. Program includes Grieg and Wolf selections from "the cd" and Haydn's last completed string quartet, op. 77 #2 in F major.
